MIRI: A suspected gangster who rampaged through a shophouse nearly died when the shopowner and customers turned the tables on him and attacked him with a machete (parang) and other sharp objects.
The incident happened on Sunday in Marudi, a rural town some 200km from here.
The alleged gangster, in his 40s, sustained serious stab wounds and slashes all over his body and face in the incident.
Sources said that the man, who is said to be involved in illegal logging, went on a rampage in the shop and tried to attack the owner with a parang following a misunderstanding on Sunday afternoon.
However, the shopowner, in his early 50s, and a group of customers retaliated and used sharp weapons from the kitchen against the assailant.
The suspected gangster has been hospitalised at the Marudi Hospital.
