MIRI: Two gold dealers from Peninsular Malaysia have lodged police reports claiming that they were robbed of some RM1mil worth of jewellery by four masked men here who were armed with a cleaver (parang).
The Miri police have launched a hunt for the alleged robbers, but they are also quizzing the two gold dealers, men aged 31 and 34, because they claimed that they were carrying the huge amount of gold in a bag and moving around in this city without any security guards.
Miri police chief Asst Comm Abang Abdillah Abang Othman said the police are very puzzled with this case, and are investigating from all angles.
"These two men came to the police station (on Monday afternoon) claiming that they had been robbed of gold items worth about a million ringgit.
"They said that they had been in Miri since last Friday and they were supplying new gold items to goldsmiths here in Miri.
"The police are puzzled because these two men claimed to be carrying such a huge amount of gold on their own. They said they moved around in this place using taxi, and they did not hire any security guards and did not even ask the police here for escort.
"They claimed that four masked men attacked them while they were alighting from a taxi outside a shopping complex at about 11am (on Monday). They claimed that the masked men were armed with only one parang," ACP Abdillah said Tuesday.
Miri police on Tuesday ordered the two gold dealers to remain in this city and to report themselves to the police station here regularly.
The police took statements from them, and had asked for details as to where they had obtained such a huge amount of gold items and how they managed to bring them into Miri.
ACP Abdillah said the police are keen to contact the duo's managers.
To a question, he said the two gold dealers had not been detained, but they had been questioned officially and would not be allowed to leave Miri until further notice. The police have also launched a hunt for the alleged robbers, he added. - Sumber
